Who We Are

The Igbo Women Association Glasgow (IWA) is a socio-cultural and charitable organisation dedicated to promoting unity, preserving heritage, and supporting the wellbeing of Igbo women and their families in Glasgow and its surrounding communities. Rooted in the values of sisterhood and collective responsibility, IWA provides a platform where women of Igbo origin, and those married to an Igbo person - can connect, celebrate their culture, and support one another in practical and meaningful ways. Our official motto, “Obi buru otu: Chukwu bu ike Anyi” - United in heart: God is our strength - reflects our belief that strength lies in unity, faith, and shared purpose.

Our Purpose

We exist to:
• Promote and preserve Igbo culture through language instruction, cultural dances, and community initiatives
• Foster unity among Igbo people while building bridges with other ethnic communities in Scotland
• Support the social, educational, and general wellbeing of our members
• Provide a structured welfare network for life’s milestones and challenges
• Encourage intercultural dialogue and civic participation
Through cultural education, advocacy, and community engagement, we help ensure that Igbo heritage remains vibrant across generations while empowering women to thrive within Scottish society.

Our Values

Everything we do is guided by five core principles:
Integrity – We uphold honesty, fairness, and accountability in all our activities.
Responsibility – We act with care and diligence in serving our members and community.
Commitment – We demonstrate loyalty and dedication to the growth of our association.
Selflessness – We prioritise collective wellbeing above personal gain.
Creativity – We embrace innovation and collaboration to strengthen our impact.

Our Governance

IWA operates through an elected Executive Committee and is overseen by a Board of Trustees. Our structure ensures transparency, accountability, and compliance with Scottish charity regulations. We are committed to operating in line with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and maintaining strong governance standards.
